Flag of the Philippines - enacted on May 19, 1898 and its shades were modified on September 16, 1997. It is of 1:2 aspect ratio. The sun (freedom) has eight rays - symbolizing the eight provinces where the uprising against the Spanish began. The three stars stand for Mindanao, Luzon and Visayas - the major regions of the Philippines. The white triangle symbolizes peace and purity; red courage and brotherhood; and blue is patriotism. In times of war, the arrangement is changed, the flag is reversed and the red is on top. It is the only flag in the world with such a radical change during armed conflict.
